Full course description

Intended for High School Juniors in Wicomico County, Maryland GEER participants.

The transition from high school to college can be very overwhelming for many young people and their families. They face the stress of being able to afford college, being away from home for the first time, meeting new friends, and worrying if they can successfully complete college level assignments. Even the students that don’t plan to attend college after high school face their own set of worries. They wonder if they will be able to obtain employment that will allow them to successfully earn money to take care of their basic needs like shelter, food, clothing, and transportation. Their futures are dependent upon one common factor: the knowledge, skills, and resources to make the right choice after high school.

The Salisbury University College and Career Readiness (CCR) Bootcamp will offer high school juniors the opportunity to participate in on campus course work that will assist them in making decisions about their futures and to reach their goals. The Summer CCR Bootcamp consists of 1 week of guided course work. Lunch will be included. The coursework focuses on three main concepts called clusters. These clusters present students with learning activities that examine:

1. What happens after high school? (choosing your pathway)

2. How do I get where I want to go? (tuning your skills)

3. What do I do next? (preparing for your next steps)

The coursework includes topics such as choosing a career, financial literacy and college debt, goal setting and time management, study skills, public speaking, test taking tips, critical thinking, problem solving, digital literacy, and college reading and writing. The modules will be taught by instructors who will offer face-to-face learning opportunities, provide feedback on assignments, and be there to guide students along the way.

When the students successfully complete the course, they will receive a digital badge. Digital badges can be used to showcase the knowledge and skills developed by participating in the course to prospective employers and they will be able to display the badges in a digital portfolio. The Career and College Readiness Bootcamp is a wonderful opportunity to sharpen the skills needed for life after high school.
